Common questions

Short answers to the questions people actually ask. If yours is not here, email the district.

Do I have to say anything?

No. You can say “I would rather just listen” and everyone will understand. Many people say nothing at all for their first meetings.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. There are no dues or fees. Groups pass a basket for those who wish to help with rent and coffee; newcomers are not expected to give anything.

Is A.A. religious?

A.A. is not allied with any religion or denomination. Meetings vary; some close with a prayer, some do not, and plenty of members are not religious. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

What if I have been drinking?

Come anyway. If you can sit quietly, you are welcome, and nobody at a meeting will be shocked.

Can I bring someone with me?

To an open meeting, yes; family and friends are welcome. Closed meetings are for anyone who wants to stop drinking. The meeting list marks each one.

What if I have a court card?

You are welcome. Choose an open meeting from the list and ask the chairperson about signing it; practices vary by group, but most will help.

Are there online meetings?

The meetings on our list meet in person. Online meetings around the world are listed by the Online Intergroup.

Will anyone know I was there?

No last names, and who you see and what you hear at a meeting stays there. More on anonymity and privacy.
